A new report from the Swiss cannabis study in Zurich shows that participants who were given legal access to cannabis report several improvements in their health and quality of life. Among the most notable findings are better sleep, reduced anxiety, and fewer issues linked to consumption.
The study is part of the pilot project “Züri Can – Cannabis mit Verantwortung,” in which over 3,100 adults were allowed to purchase regulated cannabis through pharmacies and designated sales points in Zurich.
Participants Report Positive Effects
After three years, the results show that many participants experienced positive changes compared to before joining the project. The researchers highlight in particular:
- Fewer sleep problems
- Reduced anxiety
- Lower levels of problematic use
- Fewer physical complaints
- Reduced contact with healthcare services
At the same time, the researchers observed no increase in depression or other chronic health conditions during the study period.

A Regulated Market May Play a Role
According to the researchers, the results may be linked to participants having access to controlled products with clear information about THC and CBD levels. The project also includes purchase limits and guidance from trained staff.
Participants also avoid contact with the illegal market, which researchers suggest may reduce stress and uncertainty regarding the products.
The project therefore not only examines cannabis itself, but also how a regulated market affects users’ health and behavior.
Part of a Broader Political Debate
The results come as Switzerland continues to discuss the future of cannabis legislation. Several Swiss cities are running similar pilot projects to gather data ahead of potential national reforms.
Zurich’s health director Andreas Hauri said, according to Swissinfo, that cannabis is not risk-free, but that regulation may be a better alternative than the current black market.
Research Still Cautious
However, the researchers emphasize that the results are based on participants’ own experiences and do not mean that cannabis automatically improves sleep or mental health for everyone.
Previous research has shown mixed results regarding cannabis and sleep. THC may help some people fall asleep faster, but it can also negatively affect sleep quality in other users.
