THCA moves toward narcotics classification in Sweden

The Swedish Public Health Agency has proposed that delta-9-THC acid A, also known as THCA-A, should be classified as a narcotic in Sweden. The proposal is part of broader regulation in which a total of 20 substances are proposed to be classified as narcotics or goods dangerous to health.

What is THCA?

THCA is the acidic precursor to THC that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. In its raw form, THCA is not the same as THC. When the substance is heated, for example through smoking, vaping or cooking, it can convert into delta-9-THC — the substance that produces a cannabis high and is already classified as a narcotic in Sweden.

What happens now?

The matter is now with the government, which is expected to decide on adding THCA-A to the narcotics list. The agency notes that the substance appears in products such as e-cigarettes and candy, and that THCA can convert into the already narcotics-classified delta-9-THC when heated.

A decision would mean that openly sold THCA products on the Swedish market would, in practice, be banned.
