A new research project in Denmark will investigate whether the medication Wegovy, which contains the active ingredient semaglutide, can reduce cannabis cravings in people with cannabis dependence. The study is being conducted by Psychiatric Center Copenhagen and is currently recruiting participants between the ages of 18 and 70.
Researchers Want to Test GLP-1 Drugs for Cannabis Dependence
The project, called “#HASHTAG Trial,” is based on the theory that GLP-1 medications may affect the brain’s reward system. Wegovy is currently mainly used for weight loss, while similar medications are also prescribed for type 2 diabetes.
Researchers believe previous studies suggest that GLP-1 substances may influence addictive behaviors and potentially reduce cannabis consumption. Currently, there is no approved medication specifically for cannabis dependence.

Participants Will Receive Wegovy or Placebo
The study will compare treatment with Wegovy against a placebo over a 20-week period. Participants will receive one injection per week along with four individual therapy sessions.
The research project includes between 22 and 25 visits over approximately 25 weeks. Participants will also provide blood and urine samples and complete questionnaires throughout the study. The first 50 participants will additionally be offered two brain scans.
Who Can Participate?
The study is aimed at individuals who themselves, or through relatives, believe they have problems with cannabis or hashish use. To participate, individuals must have a BMI between 23 and 50.
People with diabetes, serious illnesses, psychosis within the past five years, or those currently using other GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic or Rybelsus are not eligible to participate.
Growing Interest in Addiction Treatment
In recent years, interest has increased around how GLP-1 medications affect the brain’s signaling systems linked to reward and impulse control. Several international studies are currently exploring whether this class of drugs could be used to treat different forms of addiction, including alcohol and nicotine dependence.
The Danish study is one of the first larger trials in the Nordic region specifically focused on cannabis dependence.
