Former Green Party Leader Anton Nordqvist Suspected of Drug Offense — Cannabis Plants Found at Home

Former Green Party (Miljöpartiet) figure Anton Nordqvist is suspected of a drug offense. According to Östersunds-Posten, the suspicion arose this summer, involving both drug production — when a number of cannabis plants were found at his home — as well as drug-impaired driving.

The Östersund prosecutor’s office confirms to SVT News Jämtland that they have a case regarding Anton Nordqvist concerning drug offenses.

Left His Positions

Until quite recently, he held top positions for the Green Party both nationally and locally. In 2021 he was elected to the party executive and also served as district chair in Jämtland. He stepped down from these positions this summer, and served during the 2018-2022 term on the blue-green (blågröna) coalition in Region Jämtland Härjedalen.

The Green Party writes in an email to SVT News Jämtland that the party learned of the suspicions during the summer, whereupon Anton Nordqvist immediately left his positions. According to Marcus Friberg, chair of the Green Party executive, this happened at Anton Nordqvist’s own request.

“His actions, the suspicions and the admissions he made are of course incompatible with holding an elected office for us,” Friberg writes.

Remains on the Ballots

Since the ballots are now locked, Anton Nordqvist remains on the party’s lists for the autumn election, both for Östersund municipality, the parliament and the region, but he is no longer an eligible candidate. According to the Election Authority’s rules, a cross on a non-eligible candidate counts only as a vote for the party.
