Cannabis consumers are broadly positive about introducing a standardized THC unit system, similar to the standard drink measure for alcohol, according to a new qualitative study published in the journal Addiction.
Growing Need for Standardization
As more countries have legalized cannabis, product availability has expanded dramatically — from traditional flower to vaping products, edibles, concentrates, tinctures, and drinks. THC potency varies widely even within the same product type, creating uncertainty among consumers about how to use different products safely and consistently.
Previous research has shown that product diversification makes it harder to maintain consistent cannabis use and manage risks such as overconsumption. The study authors note that the lack of a universal standard across jurisdictions hinders the establishment of socially embedded norms for acceptable consumption.

Consumers Want THC Units – Especially Beginners
The study included 50 adult cannabis consumers from states with both criminalized and legalized cannabis. Participants were given a description of a standardized THC unit, analogous to a standard drink, and asked to share their thoughts.
Results showed that participants were broadly enthusiastic. Standardized THC units were seen as most useful for novices and infrequent consumers, though experienced consumers also indicated value for tolerance management and avoiding dependence. The potential to reduce risks related to driving under the influence and overconsumption was also highlighted.
A minority expressed skepticism, primarily about how the system could be implemented in practice.
Experienced Users Wish They Had It from the Start
A striking finding was that many experienced cannabis users said they would have benefited from a standardized THC unit when they first started using cannabis. They recommended the system especially for beginners and viewed it as a tool for preventing problems.
The researchers note that successful implementation would require managing misunderstandings about what a standardized THC unit means, as well as how regular consumers could incorporate such a measure into their established consumption routines.
