Cannabis and music have each been shown to independently affect emotional states, but the interplay between them is less explored. A new Canadian study from researchers at Dalhousie University, McGill University and Memorial University of Newfoundland now provides the first systematic insights into how the combination affects mood, relaxation and emotional state.
The study, published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, is based on an online survey of 176 questions completed by 122 cannabis users. Participants reported in detail on their cannabis consumption, music habits, emotional responses and how they experience the interplay between cannabis and music.
Increased relaxation and sense of connection
The results show that a large majority of participants view the combination of cannabis and music positively. Many report improved relaxation, better mood and an increased sense of connection when listening to music under the influence of cannabis. Cannabis also affected how participants responded to music in different settings and increased the likelihood that they would use music during everyday activities.

Cannabis as a substitute for pharmaceuticals
A notable trend in the study was that participants often used cannabis as a substitute for pharmaceutical treatments for pain, anxiety and sleep problems. When cannabis was combined with music, participants felt that the therapeutic effects were further enhanced.
No difference in music reward
Despite the positive reports, the researchers found no significant differences in overall music reward experiences with or without cannabis. This underscores that the interplay between cannabis and music is nuanced and highly context-dependent — it is not about cannabis improving the music experience itself, but rather how the combination affects the momentary emotional state.
Way forward
The researchers behind the study say the findings provide new insights into the potential for cannabis and music as complementary tools for emotional well-being. They call for further research to clarify the mechanisms behind the combined effects, and see music as a potential supportive treatment in future cannabinoid-based interventions for emotional and psychological health.
