British patient survey shows strong results for medical cannabis in mental health conditions

A new British patient survey from four major medical cannabis clinics reports that a large majority of patients experienced improved symptoms related to anxiety, depression or PTSD. The survey included a total of 6,282 patients, of whom 5,128 had received treatment for mental health conditions.

More than 97 percent reported symptom improvement

The survey was conducted by a consortium consisting of Mamedica, Alternaleaf, CB1 Medical and Curaleaf. According to the clinics, it is the largest combined British patient survey of its kind to date within medical cannabis for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Among patients in the mental health group, 97.6 percent said their symptoms had improved. 92.3 percent reported better sleep, and 93.5 percent said their ability to function in everyday life had improved.

Many viewed the treatment as more effective than previous options

Another key finding in the survey is that 90.7 percent of patients considered medical cannabis to be more effective than previous treatments they had tried. 88.3 percent described it as the most effective treatment pathway they had used so far.

At the same time, the clinics stress that the results are based on a voluntary, cross-sectional patient survey. They should therefore not be interpreted as definitive clinical evidence of efficacy, but as real-world data that may contribute to further research.

Annual follow-up planned

The consortium says the survey will be repeated annually. The aim is to track patients’ experiences over time and support further research into treatment-resistant mental health conditions.

In the United Kingdom, medical cannabis may only be prescribed by doctors on the GMC specialist register within care structures regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
